Buy Nothing Day – November 26th 2005

In the fall of 2005, amidst coordinating the Allego Concordia program, acting as the student rep for the December 3rd 2005 March for the Climate, planning youth participation in the 2005 UN climate change conference, and taking classes, I somehow found time to pull together activities for Buy Nothing Day, the annual celebration against unbridled consumption. A spontaneous group called Timebomb was formed, consisting of 10 or so individuals from Concordia eager to get active. Held on Friday, November 26th, the day consisted of many DIY activities and a free giveaway zone on the Concordia Hall Building mezzanine, then led into a zombie march through Montreal’s famous underground mall system. It culminated in a panel discussion exploring the connections between consumerism and climate change, featuring Concordia faculty, Montreal food activists and international climate change activists.
