Marche Fermier

Local residents and visitors to Montreal’s Plateau district enjoy the Marche Fermier

I initiated Marche Fermier in the summer of 2008. Several volunteers worked together to hold a farmer’s market in the parking lot at the House of Friendship. Experience from that pilot project helped us understand the scope and costs involved in establishing a market, and in 2009 Sabine Alpers and Rachel Starr approached me about taking a second try. The market was planned over the winter and in the spring, 15 producers from around Montreal joined together to open the Marche Fermier in the school yard of the École Arc-en-Ciel at the corner of Laval and Marianne streets. In 2010 a second market was opened on Thursday evenings at Parc Lahaie, and in 2011 both days started being held there, with greater visibility, simpler logistics and the support of the borough administration.

To support the market, we created a series of short videos on the producers involved, and also featured local restaurants, activists, and artists working on the development of a sustainable food system. The series was produced by and is hosted on
